Counting Crows, Across a Wire: Live in New York City
(I hope Chloe likes this one more than she has the others. . .I'm sooooo nervous.)
Adam Duritz became known more for his dating of various Hollywood ladies--especially from the cast of Friends--than for his folk-rock-lyrically-poignant songs.
This 2-disc set provides the band's performance from VH1 Storytellers & MTV Live from the 10 Spot.
One thing I really like: they mix it up--these are not the "album versions," but rather new takes on older tracks.
Check out also August and Everything After, their debut album & to me their best.
Juniors: Really cool "Do Now" taken from the "Summary of Modern Criticism," which I have linked through the teacherweb site. Gilbert & Gubar compared The Creature to Adam, Satan, & God; Percy Shelley went the nature-v-nurture route & wound up on the side of the latter; & Paul Youngquist compared Mary Shelley's take on "body as fate" as well as Mary Wollstonecraft's views of body & reason.
Great idea: "Reason is natural and beauty mere ornament."
We also heard about some really cool books.
Seminar set-up tomorrow.
Get your thinking shoes ready.
Sophomores: You got the template for the vocabulary exercises, & unit 1 definitions are due tomorrow. Also, we went to the library to get folks some outside-reading books; Remember, your OR 1.2 update will be submitted on this, the 1st of the "Forward Fridays."
Just wait until you see the shirts.
be cool

ReplyDeleteA follow up on the coolest/bravest valedictorian ever! Later Mr. Cronin!
First of all, do not be surprised if Chloe is angry... it is pretty common...; and to be honest, most of your band references go over my head to such a degree that you can actually hear the low whoosh. I think the only band I recognized and have listened to on here is the Gorrilaz Demon Days album, and that was through friends, but it was a cool album in my opinion, I should probably check out Plastic Beach too...
ReplyDeleteand "thinking shoes"? really? your skills in ad libitum are truly humbling, or at least original, McBride...
And Soroosh, cool stuff, she is truly firm in her beliefs and her resolve, an admirable aspect, and her insights are both intriguing and revelatory of the faults of more than just the educational system as we discusses in class. Sadly, I did not have time tonight to listen to the full hour podcast, so I skipped around a bit and probably missed some things, but I will definitely check the rest of the podcast out ASAP. Oh and Soroosh, I believe you mean MCBRIDE, not Cronin at the end of your post, of course I may be mistaken...
An interesting thing I have noticed is that my Honor's and AP teachers -(minus Mr. Conway last year)- and mainly my English teachers are quick to point out the numerous flaws of the educational system and reassure us that we do NOT need six or seven AP's to go to college, as the administration may lead us to believe. As I have said, I think the schools are far too focused on test scores as opposed to learning the material, but for the sake of conciseness (is that a word? it seems weird...), I will simply leave it at that. Now I have some essays to look for and annotate... You may have noticed this McBride, but I am not one for speaking up in class, I prefer to do so here...
also, if I fail my AP bio test tomorrow 'cause im not studying right now... I'm blaming you.
ReplyDeleteIn the words of the ever so relevent Parliment, WE WANT THE FUNK.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I will never scapegoat you McBride! *cough*CHLOE*cough*
well, after a spell of studying... I realized you should also listen to this. FIRST. haha. this is the first Mumford and Sons I EVER heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6rYPHmSzcE&NR=1
ReplyDeletewhoever that is in the 1st post: very, very nice . . I will check it out in its entirety this weekend. Thanks, stranger.
ReplyDeleteNoah: you win the blog for the day, & I'm glad you voice is heard (well, "read") . . oh, & that stranger in the 1st post has a running joke about "names."
Chloe: I am exhausted from all the links. But . . . be sure to check out "Round Here," Perfect Blue Buildings, "Anna Begins, & "A Murder of One" . . I myself could not STAND "Mr. Jones," their 1st single, & bought the album only after I heard & loved "Round Here."
Hard Candy remains their most underrated album, and I think This Desert Life is pretty overlooked. Chloe, you should check them out. I've seen them in concert twice, and the second concert is indirectly responsible for setting me up with my wife. Now all I want to do is listen to each of the albums in a row.
ReplyDeletehaha. :) My favorite Counting Crows song was "Round Here" too! It was my dad that introduced me to that band (well, of course not literally) but I wish...
ReplyDeleteJessica (older sis) loves Mr. Jones only because she's dating Clinton Jones.... but i agree in that it's really....*speculative look here*
and chloe, if you fail your AP bio test, don't be upset. for starters, it's all chemistry (and not really bio yet) and if it makes you feel better, I got a 64% first time i took it. It gets easier later. :)
Noah....

.....
I need help in chem and I lost your number. it's ideal that you constantly check this. :) also, what was the history reading about? :)
But... Well. In regards to the educational system's emphasis on APs. Maybe one doesn't have to take 6 or 7 APs to get into college, but in a way, it can't hurt too much either, can it? Cuz there are two cases if you take an AP and pass with a 4 or 5. One is the college accepts the credit and you don't have to pay a buttload of money to take that class ($78 looks like a pretty nice subsitute in that case). Granted, you'll still probably pay the same amount of money that year (cuz you'll just take the next level of the class), but in the long run, you save. :)
But the other case is that the college does not accept the credit. In which case, you already have the knowledge, and while yes, you are paying a lot of money for the class (which varies depending on the college), the class should be much easier, giving you more time to work on the classes you haven't taken yet.
One of things about APs is that you should take the ones you're not interested in. Because if you are going to be in a bio major, the college probably won't accept the AP credit, but they might accept the APUSH credit.
Final thing for me. Anyone interested in seeing a MUSE concert? Sept. 23rd. (Not really sure on time...) at the Honda Center in Anaheim. I can get 2 tickets in section 415 seats A1 &2. $60 for your ticket.
a couple conditions:
1. I must know you... and be able to put up with you.
2. I need a ride to and from the concert (and so do you... so i would catch one with you.)
3. I need to know ASAP, so find me.
4. *just a side note* In case you want to go (just not with me) tickets are still on sale. :)
